The boardwalk that lined the Atlantic coast of Long Island was packed with tourists and bums alike. Rich and dirty they walked amongst each other, one begging for spare change the other trying to appease their children who were too short to ride the jagged roller coasters.
The five of us sat in the shadows, propped up against benches and seaside platforms. No one paid much attention to us as we passed around a bottle of red wine. Zacarius took a swig and leaned back against Persephone, his eyes relaxing amidst the bonfire we had going in the sand. Isekheul toyed with a portable radio and fixed it to a station that played popular music. He then took the wine bottle and began dancing around the fire. I rolled my eyes at his behavior knowing that we should be more alert in case they were to appear again. It was only a matter of time before we couldn’t avoid each other anymore.
As if on cue, a roar of what sounded like stormy thunder came from the opposite end of the boardwalk. The noise increased to deafening proportions as it came near and I felt a nudge against my arm. It was Seraphina, her eyes wide with anticipation of who or what lurked down the beach. Small, round lights grew to bigger and brighter orbs as I realized that the booming sound came from four motorcycles.
The group stood up, suddenly uninterested in music and wine. We loomed in the darkness of the docks, perching atop algae- covered beams and rocks. It was them, our rival gang taking a joyride in our territory.
The four on motorcycles, all dressed in their gothic, midnight black attire, zoomed passed spewing sand from their back tires. Some of the riders did not notice that they were being watched, studied, but the leader did. I could sense his confidence from a mile away. He knew what he was doing. I could almost see the sparkling glint in his eye as he drove passed. A smirk formed in the corners of his mouth. I wanted to love and hate him all at once for he was the most vile but beautiful creature that I had ever seen.
I turned to my companions as the engines of the motorcycles faded into the twilight of the sea. Zacarius, Persephone, and Isekheul glared in their direction, a deep hatred filling their eyes while it was Seraphina that surprised me. She took in a profound, longing breath and sighed. I was not the only one who was doing the admiring on this occasion. I clenched my fists in anger. Something had to be done. There was no more time for vampiric etiquette. The world would soon come to feel the loss of Tokio Hotel.
