“Tell me again why you volunteered us to babysit?” Zac asked, leaning over his wife’s shoulder to watch her as she dressed their son in his cowboy costume.
“If I recall correctly, you said you always wanted your own little brood of kids, so I figured we could start by practicing for the future with your niece and nephews,” Aubrey explained, pecking Zac on the lips before turning back to their two-month-old son.
“Fair enough,” Zac conceded. “But don’t you think Eli’s a little young for this?”
“It’s his first Halloween, Zac,” Aubrey answered. “We have to do something. Besides, he’ll be as snug as a bug in a rug in his stroller with cousin Viggo, so he’ll be just fine.”
“Yeah, but it’s Halloween,” Zac whined, thinking of the scary movie marathon he’d be missing out on tonight.
Aubrey, obviously sensing his thoughts, rolled her eyes. “We’re just doing a lap around the neighborhood so the older kids can do the whole trick-or-treat spiel and get their candy. Then we’ll come home, check out the goods and let them eat a little and then turn on a family friendly movie. And you know they’ll be out before it’s over, so you won’t miss any of the really scary stuff,” she said. “I doubt Tay and Nat and Ike and Nik will be out that late anyway.”
“You’ve got it all figured out, don’t you?” Zac grinned, wrapping his arms around Aubrey’s waist and resting his head on her shoulder to watch as Eli squirmed around on his changing table.”
“Yes, I’m a genius, you know,” Aubrey smirked.
“Of course you are,” Zac readily agreed. “You married me, after all.”
“Well, I only did that to keep my dad from shooting you when he found out you’d knocked me up.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Zac sighed. “So, when are the troops supposed to arrive?”
“Soon,” Aubrey replied. “They were stopping for dinner before they went to the party.”
“Does that mean we have to feed the kids?” Zac grimaced.
“Luckily no,” Aubrey smiled. “The kids were promised to come fed and dressed.”
“That’s good.”
“Says the man who wants a horde of his own,” Aubrey snorted.
“I wouldn’t mind feeding and dressing my own kids,” Zac reasoned. “I just don’t want to pick up Tay and Ike’s slack. Plus, having our own brood would mean I’ll have someone else to rake up the leaves for me in the future.”
“Very mature.”
“Speaking of mature,” Zac grinned, “you never said what we were going to do after Nat and Tay and Nik and Ike pick up the kids and Eli’s fast asleep.”
“Hmm … I was thinking maybe we could start practicing for when we’re ready to start working on the next addition to the family.”
“You really are a genius,” Zac complimented. “Practice makes perfect and all that. And we wouldn’t want to let Eli down when he’s ready for a little brother or sister.”
“No, we certainly wouldn’t want that.”
